In 1977, just ten years after its original construction, the Montreal Biosphere went up in flames, destroying the transparent acrylic lining. Buckminster Fuller agreed to rebuild the monument in 1992, and the building now serves as an environmental museum, specifically for the St. Lawrence River. Fuller agreed on salvaging the majority of the original site, but new features of the dome included added exhibition space, offices, and a restaurant.
